Milton

Welcome to Milton

Milton is a thriving suburb in northwest Chittenden County. Supposedly named for the celebrated poet, John Milton, the town has been a fixture of the New England landscape since before the War for Independence. The town is comprised of Milton itself in the east as well as the communities of Cozy Corner, West View, Checkerberry Village, and West Milton. To the southwest, the Lamoille River flows into Lake Champlain. Bombardier Park, Eagle Mountain, and Milton Town Forest are some of the attractions, as well as local neighborhood parks and recreational areas scattered throughout the region.

The town initially gained renown for its potash and dairy production, eventually coming to supply butter and cheese to some of the largest cities on the eastern seaboard. The heyday of the dairy industry declined rapidly in the 20th century, however, and there are only 7 or 8 dairy farms currently operating in the town. Today, Milton is a thriving community of over 10,000 residents, sandwiched between Burlington to the south and St. Albans to the north. A short causeway connects Milton to South Hero Island with its miles of shoreline, and provides a welcome retreat from the mainland.
